KUCHING, 28 July — Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, announced today that a monthly flag-raising ceremony for the Sarawak flag, ‘Ibu Pertiwi,’ will be held at Dataran Ibu Pertiwi on the first Sunday of every month.
During a press conference after officiating the ceremony, Abang Johari expressed gratitude to the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) for organizing this activity, which is expected to enhance the tourism sector.
“Visitors can witness the raising of ‘Ibu Pertiwi,’ which will inspire the people of Sarawak to continue developing our region into a prosperous and developed area,” he stated. “The symbolism of raising the Sarawak flag will also hold special significance for the younger generation.”
To foster a sense of love and devotion for Sarawak and the nation, students from various schools attended the ceremony. Abang Johari emphasized that this initiative would contribute to Sarawak’s future, especially in the new economic era.
“In Britain, you have the changing of the guard ceremony, and other countries have similar traditions. For us in Kuching, this is a solemn ceremony we want to share with our visitors,” he added.
Abang Johari noted the popularity of Dataran Ibu Pertiwi as a spot for photography, assuring that the area would be maintained for public enjoyment.
The event included Abang Johari inspecting the guards of honor and a special poetry performance titled ‘Ibu Pertiwi, Kedaulatan Sarawak.’
Also present were, Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian, State Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, and Deputy Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Dr. Abdul Rahman Junaidi.
